MEET THE FOUNDER

Brooke Young

Mother · Educator · Advocate · Founder of The Fort Learning Community

Brooke Young is the founder of The Fort Learning Community, a mother of two, an educator, and a passionate advocate for children and families. Her own children have been some of her greatest teachers, deepening her understanding of how important it is for children to feel seen, supported, and valued as they are.

With a Bachelor of Education, studies in First Nations Studies and psychology, and more than 15 years of experience in public education, Brooke is passionate about creating inclusive, relationship-centred spaces where children can thrive. Her approach is further informed by professional learning in cultural awareness, cultural safety and authenticity, the nervous system, and understanding behaviour, as well as the work of leading voices including Mona Delahooke, Ross Greene, Gabor Maté, Robyn Gobbel, Carolyn Roberts, and Robin Wall Kimmerer.

As a Métis woman, Brooke values honouring each child’s culture and identity as an important part of building meaningful relationships and a true sense of belonging. Guided by both professional learning and a lifetime of lived experience, she is committed to creating a place where children and families feel understood, supported, and connected.

WHAT GUIDES THE FORT

Our Community Values

These values shape how we build relationships, support children, work with families, and create a community where people feel they belong.
Relationship
Connection comes first.
Children thrive when they feel safe, seen, and supported through caring, consistent relationships.
Inclusion
Every child belongs.
We welcome different ways of learning, communicating, moving, and experiencing the world.
Growth
Every child has their own path.
We support confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of self at each child’s own pace.
Respect
You are welcome here.
Children, families, and team members are treated with kindness, dignity, and care for their identities, cultures, and lived experiences.
Community
Better together.
We work alongside families to build connection, belonging, and shared support around every child.
ROOTED IN COMMUNITY

Here for local families.

The Fort Learning Community supports local families in Courtenay and across the Comox Valley through connection, inclusion, and the belief that every child deserves to be seen, supported, and valued as they are.

A welcoming space

Children are supported as they are, not expected to fit one narrow idea of how they should learn or participate.

Family partnership

Families are listened to, included, and treated as an important part of each child’s support system.

Shared community

The Fort creates opportunities for children and caregivers to build connection, confidence, and belonging.
